How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV Charging

Are you thinking about buying or leasing an electric car? Charging time and charging methods are probably some things you’re curious about. How long does it take to charge an electric car like the Chevy Bolt EV? EV charging time is faster and more convenient than some Portage drivers may think, sometimes taking less than a half-hour, depending on the charging method you use. We talk about those different charging methods below.

Public Electric Car Charging Time

You may have noticed more and more public charging stations showing up around Galesburg lately. How long does it take to charge an electric car at one of these stations? That depends on whether the charging station is a Fast DC charging station. See below:

EV Charging Time – Public Charging Stations

Fast DC Charging (Level 3)

  • Less than 50 KW per hour
  • Up to 80% charge in 36 minutes

Basic Public AC Charging (240V)

  • Up to 7.4 KW per hour
  • 20% charge per hour

Home Electric Car Charging Time

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home? Again, this depends on the method. An EV can be charged by either plugging the cord that comes with the car into an existing 120V outlet, or purchasing a home charging station that will need to be professionally installed. Chevy recommends purchasing a home charging station for much faster charging. In fact, Chevrolet will pay for the installation of a 240V charging outlet for those who purchase a Chevy Bolt EV or Bolt EUV. Here are the charging times for these home methods:

EV Car Charging Time by Charger

Level 1 Home AC Charging (120V)

  • Less than 2 KW per hour
  • 2% per hour

Level 2 Home AC Charging (240V)

  • Up to 7.4 KW per hour
  • 20% per hour
